iDEAL is transitioning to Wero, a new pan-European payment standard. The rollout has already started, and by the end of 2027, iDEAL will be fully replaced. Here's a practical overview of what's changing, when it's happening, and what you need to do.

Wero is a European payment system developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), a consortium backed by major banks including ABN AMRO, ING, and Rabobank in the Netherlands, along with banks across Germany, France, and Belgium. It's designed to replace fragmented national payment systems like iDEAL, Giropay, and Payconiq with a single solution that works across borders.
Like iDEAL, Wero uses account-to-account transfers built on SEPA Instant Credit Transfer rails. Payments are processed in real time, directly from the customer's bank account. For shoppers, the experience will feel very similar to what they're used to.
The transition is happening in two phases.
Phase 1 (early 2026) is a co-branding phase. Starting January 29, 2026, the iDEAL logo will be replaced by a combined "iDEAL | Wero" logo at checkout, in banking apps, and on payment pages. Behind the scenes, transactions will begin migrating to the Wero platform in a controlled process, subject to approval by De Nederlandsche Bank. For merchants, nothing changes technically during this phase. Your PSP will handle the branding updates.
Phase 2 (Q4 2026 to end of 2027) is the full rollout. Wero will gradually replace iDEAL entirely. Depending on how your checkout is implemented, this phase may require technical or configuration changes. By the end of 2027, all iDEAL merchants will need to have transitioned to Wero.
For most merchants using a standard iDEAL integration through a PSP like Adyen, Mollie, or Stripe, the answer right now is: very little. Your PSP will roll out the branding changes and handle the technical migration on their end.
If you have a custom checkout or bespoke payment integration, Phase 2 is where things may need attention. It's worth checking with your PSP or implementation partner about their migration timeline and whether your setup will require any adjustments.
There are also a few practical things to review. Make sure any references to iDEAL in your email templates, invoices, help pages, and order confirmations are updated when the branding changes go live. Your PSP should provide the updated logo assets.
Very little. The payment flow stays familiar, and iDEAL will remain visible during the co-branding phase to build recognition for the Wero name. Over time, Wero will also introduce additional features like purchase protection and cross-border payments across participating European countries.
For our clients, we're actively monitoring PSP rollouts and assessing which implementations will need updates during Phase 2. If your checkout requires technical changes, we'll handle them as part of our ongoing operations work. If you're unsure whether your setup will be affected, get in touch and we'll take a look.
